Links

Loads of my friends - both in Farnham, Milton Keynes and further afield - are "on the web", so here are some links to a few of them whose pages you might find interesting, as well as some other more general interest sites to have a look at.

Please note that I can take no responsibility for the content of any of these linked sites. If however you find anything here offensive or inappropriate, please let me know as soon as possible, and I'll see what I can do.

Friends on the web
  • Darren Edmunds - Darren's a good friend from my Milton Keynes days
  • David Parker - sorry, Dr David Parker, who helped me keep my sanity in Milton Keynes after most had jumped ship
  • Emily & James Baldock & family - more long-time good friends, now happily married and increasing their family
  • Sam Marshall and Tim Hunt - former colleagues and office-mates from my Open University years
  • Tim White - one of our more technologically switched-on people here in Farnham

Christian stuff

Recommended retailers and services
  • Amazon - the definitive on-line retailer, not always the cheapest but still one of the best
  • CD-WOW, HMV and Play.com - excellent prices and free delivery on DVDs, CDs and much more
  • Gareth Banks - party DJ and karaoke wizard, available for weddings, bar mitzvahs etc...
  • Hawkin's Bazaar - "things you thought had gone for ever, things you never even knew existed"
  • Lavender Hill Company - for the finest and most imaginative floral arrangements
  • Man with Mower - lawn-mowing and other gardening for the Farnham area
  • Sandpiper Restoration - period and listed building sandblasting specialist for southern England
  • World War II Books - a friendly if obviously somewhat specialist book-seller
  • The Watch Hut - decent brands, good value, and no-nonsense fast free delivery

Internet related
  • 1&1 Internet - high performance website and email hosting to suit every size of pocket [referral link]
  • BroadbandMax Speed test - the best broadband speed tester I have found; use it to check whether your ISP is delivering on its promises
  • Diary 4 - I'm biased, but this is undoubtedly the finest group organizer website in the world!
  • Goznet Systems - I may (again) be biased, but they do produce exceedingly good websites
  • Mozilla Firefox - one of the best and most secure web browsers, a fine replacement for Internet Explorer in particular
  • Mozilla Thunderbird - use this for your email instead of Outlook Express, and say goodbye to most viruses
  • OpenDNS - a free alternative to shaky ISP domain-name resolution, with rogue site filtering
  • PlusNet - one of the best service providers around for the average broadband user [referral link]
  • Secunia Software Inspector - free scan to help ensure everything on your Windows PC is up to date with security patches, making internet use safer
  • SRWare Iron - another great browser; not as good developer support as Firefox, but lean and mean for everyday use, being based on Google Chrome
  • ThinkBroadband - all the latest news and reviews on broadband services and hardware [formerly www.adslguide.org.uk]

Astronomy
  • Heavens Above - the best site on the web for predicting satellite visibility, including Iridium flares
  • Solar wind - current conditions - check whether your computer's likely to fry in an hour's time
  • Space Weather - news on what the sun is up to, i.e. sunspots, flares, coronal mass ejections etc, as well as more general astronomical news

Programming stuff

Search and reference tools
  • BT PhoneNet UK - a better Directory Enquiries, on the web, for a fraction of the usual cost
  • Catalogue Shopping Review - the inside scoop on stuff from Argos, Tesco Direct etc
  • Google - the only general-purpose search engine really worth bothering with these days
  • Google Earth - view anywhere on Earth from satellite, part of the Google empire worth a specific mention
  • Google Maps - currently the best mapping and route-finding service on the web
  • Merriam Webster - a good on-line dictionary despite its American-English slant
  • Urban Legends Reference Pages - bust those myths good and properly!
  • Wikipedia - conceptually flawed but in practice quite brilliant on-line encyclopedia, found in tests to be just as accurate as Britannica

News and news aggregation
  • Ananova - not always the most reliable news, but quick off the mark and available even at times of crisis
  • BBC News - "Here is the news", 'nuff said really; the definitive news web site - just a shame you have to wade through their hideous new 2010 layout
  • Jeff Rense Program - a lot of chaff and downright twaddle to weed through, but publishes the news stories that the mainstream western outlets dare not touch
  • The Register - all the technology-related news you can eat, without the tedious humour attempts of its rival
